"Building startups is hard but it is easier to do with people you enjoy hanging out with."
This is the motto of Skåne's latest entrepreneurial home The Ground, built on the initiative of TAT-founders Hampus Jakobsson and Karl-Anders Johansson. On Bredgatan 4 in central Malmö, they have renovated an old building into a modern three floor co-working space, saving wooden beams and fire places in different sized offices.
Here startups can develop their business ideas and scale up, meet over breakfast and take a bath while doing laundry. The house reflects a co-working culture which is more about being a family than working in an office.
Sofia Franzén, founder of travel site Owegoo, involved in Malmö startups and press officer for The Ground, explains more:
– There is great value in being in the same house as other startups. We are all in various stages of our journeys, and we learn a lot from each other - to be able to bounce ideas over a cup of coffee, ask for tips and advice, and share one's daily frustrations and successes, it means a lot for both the companies as well as individuals located here.
A space for disruption
The present startups are several disruptive in the digital world, such as microdonation method Flattr, travel site Owegoo which looks at need instead of destination, and user generated street view service Mapillary. The Ground also houses community builders Malmö startups, influenced by startup ecosystems around the world who are shaping networks while branding a local startup scene as a whole. This helps small scale entrepreneurs to attract investors, media attention as well as the right work skills.
