Two countries connected by one bridge. The Øresund Bridge.
Thanks to the Øresund Bridge, Skåne now forms part of the largest labour market in the Nordics.
There are eleven universities ain the region and businesses have profiled themselves in knowledge-intensive industries such as biotechnology and medicine.
In July 2000, the areas of Skåne in Sweden and Själland in Denmark were connected with a fixed link for the first time. The 16 kilometre long Øresund Bridge has had a major impact on the region's economy, creating an integrated labour market. Approximately 17,000 people commute every day to work and study in the neighbouring countries.
With around 3.8 million inhabitants, the Öresund region is the largest labour market in the Nordics. Nowadays it takes less than 35 minutes to travel from Malmö Central Station to the heart of Copenhagen. You pass Copenhagen International Airport, Kastrup, on the way.
The close proximity to Copenhagen and the continent means Malmö is sometimes called Sweden's gateway to Europe. Sweden's third largest city is a multicultural melting pot whose population has roots throughout the world. More than 170 nationalities are represented in Malmö, speaking over a hundred different languages.
Western Skåne is the driving force of the south Swedish economy. Malmö has enjoyed a particularly rapid development since the nineties and has gone from being an industrial city to a modern knowledge-based city. The city now has a university and the new neighbourhoods are characterized by investments in environmental technologies and sustainable solutions. One such neighbourhood is the Western Harbour where Turning Torso, the 190-meter high skyscraper, is a well-known profile.
The largest and oldest research park, Ideon Science Park, is in the university city of Lund. It was founded with the help of an investment from Ikea founder Ingvar Kamprad and is home to 330 companies in the areas of mobile telephony, IT, life sciences and cleantech.
The eastern parts of Skåne concentrate on tourism and food production. 45 percent of Swedish food sales come from Skåne. In the Kristianstad vicinity alone there are 1,600 companies working with food production in different ways.
